How to Make a Swap Partition on Ubuntu

Ubuntu and other Linux distributions use swap partitions to store data that don't fit in the computer's physical memory. Ubuntu also stores the contents of the system's memory on the swap partition when the computer hibernates. Swap partitions are basically the Linux equivalent of the Windows page file, except they're a separate partition instead of a single file on a larger partition. Ubuntu normally creates a swap partition during installation, but you can also create swap partitions later. You can use the graphical GNOME partition editor, GParted, to partition your disk.
Instructions

Install GParted

1.Click the "Applications" menu on the panel at the top of the Ubuntu desktop, and click "Ubuntu Software Center."

2.Type "Gparted" into the search box at the upper right corner of the Ubuntu Software Center window.

3.Click "GNOME Partition Editor" in the list of software and click "Install."

4.Type your password and click "Authenticate."

Make Swap Partition

1.Click the "System" menu at the top of the Ubuntu desktop, click "Administration" and click "GParted Partition Editor."

2.Type your password and press "Enter."

3.Right-click in an area of unpartitioned space, and click "New."

4.Click the "File System" box in the Create New Partition window, and click "Linux-Swap."

5.Select a size for the partition by clicking and dragging the handles at the left or right sides of the bar at the top of the Create New Partition window.

6.Click "Add."

7.Click the checkmark-shaped "Apply All Operations" button on the GParted toolbar.

8.Click "Apply."

9.Right-click the swap partition you created in the GParted window after the operation completes, and click "Swapon."
